The Department furnishes anesthesia to BWH patients in 34 operating
rooms, four obstetric suites, 25 labor and delivery rooms and the
Post Anesthetic Care Unit, and for cardioversions, radiology
procedures and radiation therapy. Annually, some 30,000 operations
and 9,000 obstetrical deliveries including high risk are performed.
With rotations, the BWH teaching base expands to encompass
operating rooms at Children's Hospital Medical Center and New
England Deaconess Hospital and Intensive Care Units at Children's
Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.
Residents are assigned cases and responsibility for emergency care commensurate with developing skills and experience. Supervision is never more than 1:2 and is frequently 1:1. In-house on duty call averages every 4th to 5th day; a full night of coverage is usually followed by a day off. Residents are allotted vacation time and senior residents receive additional time away for educational meetings. Teaching is at bedside in the operating room, in the Post Anesthetic Care Unit, Pain Management Center and Obstetric Suite during the actual administration of anesthesia. Assigned reading of current literature and continual discussion of cases and their complications augment this bedside training. Pre- and post-operative rounds, patient examination and evaluation and progress notes are critical components of the method, and medical management issues are discussed with senior anesthesia staff and consultants from other services. Each Wednesday, the start of the elective case schedule is delayed to enable attendance at the Lecture Series and Clinical Conference. In the formal Lecture Series, local medical experts and visiting professors present areas of interest in Anesthesia. The Clinical Conference is a forum for review of cases that are illustrative of anesthesia pitfalls and related risk management and quality assurance issues.
